We’re Human Too set for launch at YSJ

LAUREN MASTER

The launch of We’re Human Too is set to take place at York St John University in early March 2016. The launch will be the premiere screening of a series of short films that look past the stereotypes of homelessness in search of the people and stories behind the labels.

The films will be showcased alongside a series of positive portraits featuring people living and breathing the experience of homelessness.

The event will invite participants of the work to join local professionals and City of York councillors and will include introductions to the work by the people they feature.

We’re Human Too Films Previewed at Arc Light

The room was charged with emotion this evening at a private premiere screening at York Arc Light for residents. Participants of the project sat in silence as they previewed the 3 powerful short films for the first time, all made as part of the We’re Human Too campaign.

IMG_6086Participants were also thankful and humble to receive prints of the stunning portraits shot by Scott Akoz photography.IMG_6094         The films, which are emotive in their nature, feature very honest and open conversations with people experiencing homelessness. The films explore childhood memories, life, love and of course homelessness.

We’re Human Too Film goes into Post-Production

Over the last few days Inspired Youth have been processing the interviews for the We’re Human Too short film. The interviews were emotional and real and have given us some really powerful content to work with for the film, which will serve as a promotional tool for the online exhibition by carrying the key messages and themes of the project. Below ‘Doug’ gives us a very open and honest interview, talks about his work, family and future aspirations.

“We’re Human Too” – Shoot (Day 3)

Three days of intensive photography and filmmaking came to it’s crescendo at Arc Light this evening as the “We’re Only Human” project photoshoot and film interviews continued. Today Inspired Youth & Scott Akoz met some young women which further demonstrated that homelessness does not discriminate against age or gender and effects people from all walks of life.

The interviews were powerful and profound and left the team feeling inspired and moved by the emotion it evoked. Below Inspired Youth’s Technical Manager,Liam, captures sound for an interview as part of the filmmaking process.IMG_0386

Scott Akoz continued to capture amazing portraits of everyone involved, images we are sure will be treasured and shared with family and friends. Using the live feed meant people could see the images immediately after they had been taken.IMG_6014 IMG_6015   IMG_6020  IMG_6029  IMG_6034 IMG_6035

It was great to see people grow in confidence as each shoot progressed. We are really looking forward to processing and editing the images and producing the film.   IMG_6039

We now enter a post production period and will return to Arc Light to review the photographs and short film with everyone that has been involved. #werehumantoo

“We’re Human Too” – Shoot Day 2

IMG_5983

As Inspired Youth and Scott Akoz re-joined forces for the second day shoot, the project was in full swing and the creative the process really began to build momentum. It was good to meet different characters and hear a range of unique stories. No two stories were the same, and it highlighted the diversity of backgrounds and the differing reasons why people were facing homelessness. IMG_5961IMG_0260

Keeping in line with the series the shots were designed to look alike but while they had the same style, each character was really coming out in the images making them really unique to the person. IMG_5964

It was also good to work with some younger people who had experienced homelessness, both of whom had moved on from Arc Light to Orwin house, a supported housing project also run by Arc Light. It was good to hear that they had found help in crisis through Arc Light, and saw their progress as phase two of their path towards independent living.

It was another great session with Scott Akoz capturing some really strong portrait shots. Inspired Youth continued with the film production and had some profound conversations which will make for fascinating interviews. It has already been a moving, inspiring and emotional journey which we are proud to be part of.

The interviews ranged in content but everyone had something unique to say from their own experiences. It was great to get to know people a little bit and to have conversations about love, life and futures as well as their experiences of homelessness.
